York has a fascinating history and is a great place to bring groups of all ages. York Archaeological Trust's attractions; JORVIK, DIG and Barley Hall, uniquely bring all of this history together to create a distinctive day out in this beautiful City - all at an exclusive price.

At Barley Hall your group will be invited to make themselves at home, explore the medieval home of the Mayor of York, and perhaps even enjoy a glass of mead in the Great Hall.

Alternatively, you can combine your group's visit to Barley Hall with a visit to JORVIK, DIG, Micklegate Bar Museum or all three! Buy a package to two or three attractions to take advantage of significant discounts.

JORVIK

At JORVIK Viking Centre you stand on the site of an astounding archaeological discovery. Thirty years ago archaeologists revealed the houses, workshops and backyards of the Viking Age city of Jorvik. They then studied the city and over 40,000 excavated objects in such detail that we can now take you on a journey to Jorvik, the Viking Age city of York.

At the JORVIK Viking Centre you will travel BACK 1000 years on board your time machine through the backyards and houses to the bustling streets of Jorvik. Everything is based on facts - from the layout of the houses, the working craftsmen, the language of the gossiping neighbours, to the smells of cooking and the cesspit! As you travel through the busy market place, you will experience a blast of smoke as you pass the blacksmith's furnace, smell the fish on the riverside and visit the hearth scene inside the Viking home.

DIG

Grab a trowel and enter DIG, the archaeological adventure. You will investigate replicas of some of the most important digs in York and reveal some of the most significant finds that have changed the way we think about life in Roman, Viking, Medieval and Victorian times. What tells us that the Roman Soldiers were keen gamblers? What grave goods can be found with the monk buried on the Fishergate site? All will be revealed under the rubber gravel at DIG.

As you continue through DIG you will learn how archaeologists analyse the information they find on site, how finds are recorded, and what dirt and bugs would be found in a typical Victorian house. When you finish your archaeological exploration you will then see how all of the information is put together in a 3D audiovisual tour of what life would have been like in the periods that you have investigated.
